Biography

Dr Patrick Bowden

Dr Patrick Bowden is committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centred cancer care. He is a highly experienced doctor who remains at the forefront of cutting-edge radiation therapy techniques and clinical research.

With over 20 years of experience as a radiation oncologist, Dr Patrick Bowden is a leading expert in the field of advanced radiation therapy. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1994. His oncology career began at the prestigious Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where he became Director of the Tattersall’s Cancer Centre. Dr Bowden has been instrumental in building some of the nation’s most advanced radiotherapy services, including his role as the inaugural Director of Epworth Radiation Oncology, where he established Australia’s largest stereotactic radiation therapy service.
He is one of the most experienced stereotactic radiotherapy doctors in Australia, having delivered over 2000 courses of treatment in his career.

He provides stereotactic treatment at a number of cancer centres throughout Melbourne, and also in Canberra. Many patients travel from other parts of Australia and Asia to have treatment with him, and accommodation is made available to them.

Dr Bowden’s expertise is not just clinical but also academic. He has been the principal investigator in numerous groundbreaking clinical trials, including the TRANSFORM study, which evaluated the efficacy of stereotactic radiation therapy for oligometastatic prostate cancer. This was the largest trial ever conducted in the world on this disease. His work continues to shape the future of radiation oncology, with a focus on improving patient outcomes and advancing cancer care.

Furthermore, his experience as a clinician and researcher, as well as expertise as a Director of Cancer Centres, has been recognised by major hospitals in Melbourne, who have elected him to their Medical Advisory Committees since 2007.
